The influence of French Symbolism on Hofmannsthal's poetry has been the subject of several studies, notably Steven Sondrup's Hofmannsthal and the French Symbolist Tradition (Berne: Lang, 1976) and Thomas Kovach's Hofmannsthal and Symbolism: Art and Life in the Work of a Modern Poet (New York: Lang, 1985).
