Apr. 8--Houston scientists have found that an underactive thyroid may reduce a woman's chance of developing breast cancer, a discovery that ultimately should lead to new treatment for the disease.
Researchers at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center reported Monday that women newly diagnosed with breast cancer were 57 percent less likely to have hypothyroidism -- a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone -- than cancer-free women in the study.
