This is a remarkable book. At a time when Johnson research is booming, Thomas Schmidt has not taken the easier option and concentrated on a clearly definable sideline. That kind of approach can be revealing too, of course, but it is refreshing to read a sustained piece of research and interpretation which goes for the whole, and lifts the veil. I mean this almost literally, as Uwe Johnson hid away a large enough number of subtexts in his major novel ...
