Apr. 9--HILLAH, Iraq--In a move designed to eliminate one of the remaining Republican Guard strongholds outside Baghdad, more than 3,000 American GIs began an assault here to further isolate Iraq's capital from reinforcements.
The effort, led by the Army's 2-70th Battalion, included fighter jets, heavy armor and artillery. Within one 30-minute period, nearly 40 artillery rounds struck an area believed to have hundreds of dug-in Iraqi infantry troops.
