Jason Varitek broke his right elbow making a sensational diving catch two years ago at Fenway Park, bringing to an abrupt halt what could have been his finest season with the Red Sox. It also forced the catcher last year to focus on survival rather than supremacy.
This season is different.
Varitek, now in his sixth full season in Boston, is coming off a winter free of injury rehabilitation for the first time since the spring of 1999. That was the season in which Varitek finished with a career-best 20 home runs and 76 RBI, numbers that Varitek has since been attempting to replicate.
