Apr. 11--After more than two decades of high-priced, high-speed laps across the Atlantic that were the pride of the European aerospace industry, the supersonic Concorde jet will be retired this fall by its operators, British Airways and Air France.
The needle-nosed Concorde, which flies at an altitude of more than 11 miles and twice the speed of sound, will be permanently grounded because of sagging demand and skyrocketing maintenance costs.
