Apr. 11--LONDON -- The Concorde, sleek supersonic airliner that whisked the rich and famous across the ocean in time for a second breakfast, is headed for retirement.

British Airways and Air France announced yesterday the luxury service inaugurated in 1976 would be grounded, a victim of the disastrous downturn for the airline industry since Sept. 11.

"With its going, we must lose some of the romance from aviation," British Airways CEO Rod Eddington told reporters. But he said it was "a prudent business decision" to end the transatlantic service this October. Air ...
