A new state law that gives sole proprietors access to less expensive health insurance through plans offered by chambers of commerce and business associations has brought big savings to thousands of upstate entrepreneurs-and none in New York City.
The legislation, signed in September, says health insurers offering group coverage plans to businesses with two to 50 employees through chambers of commerce or associations must provide the same policies to sole proprietors. The bill offers a carrot to insurers by allowing them to charge up to 20% more to cover any additional costs.
