Apr. 12--At Verizon Wireless' cellular switching center in Plymouth Meeting, a 4,700-square-foot room is packed to the ceiling with blinking, climate-controlled equipment that routes hundreds of thousands of calls, text messages, and wireless Internet connections every hour.
Battery backups and emergency diesel generators ensure that the system practically never goes down.
