DALLAS _ Miguel Tejada appeared dumbfounded. His bemused teammates shook their heads and chuckled. But, seven games into the season, the reigning American League Most Valuable Player had just been summoned to his first-year manager's office to discuss his state of mind and his batting average.
"It's only been 21 at-bats," Tejada grumbled.
Actually, Tejada had been up 32 times when Ken Macha asked to speak with him before Wednesday's game at The Ballpark in Arlington. And, with as many strikeouts as hits in that span (six), Tejada had only a .188 batting average, a .212 on-base percentage and one (intentional) walk.
