City Council Speaker Gifford Miller recently. offered a solution to New York's fiscal crisis that is not likely to agree with many property owners.
Citing increased risk of terrorism, the speaker proposed that the New York Fire Department conduct annual inspections of every high-rise, hotel, and theater building in New York, charging the owners approximately $200 an hour for its services.
These new inspections, in addition to the annual fire inspections already conducted by the city, would incorporate evacuation drills, staged rescue operations, and fire suppression.
