Reducing food intake by 100 calories per day, or the equivalent of three bites of a fast-food hamburger, is the first step in ending the "obesity epidemic," according to a Feb 6, 2003, news release from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Although eating 100 fewer calories will not result in weight loss, it could prevent the 1.8-lb to 2-lb weight gain that the average person currently experiences each year.
