HOW times change. In the 1930s, Edward Ardizzone wrote and illustrated a charming children's book called Lucy Brown and Mr Grimes. Lucy was an orphan who lived with her governess, but as in many a fairy tale she was lonely and unhappy, until one day she met an elderly gentleman in the park. Mr Grimes, the old gent was lonely too, adopts Lucy and they live happily ever after. Try that on a publisher today.
But, there's more. Mr Grimes takes Lucy shopping for new clothes, beautifully drawn by Ardizzone. They are all laid out on the page, including a huge pair of black knickers.
