CASE FACTS: Patricia Eckersley brought her five-year-old son, Austin, to the emergency room of Lompoc District Hospital on the evening of October 28, 1999. The child was vomiting, had diarrhea, a headache, chills and fever. The child looked pale, ill, and mildly dehydrated. Dr. Steven Reichel ordered lab tests. Lab tests results indicated that the child probably had viral gastroenterology. After administration of fluids and medications, the child's condition improved. Dr. Reichel called the child's pediatrician, Dr. George Robertson, to assess whether it might be appropriate to give the child an antibiotic, since blood tests showed a "low-normal white count" with elevated ...
