CASE FACTS: Patricia Eckersley brought her five-year-old son, Austin, to the emergency room of Lompoc District Hospital on the evening of October 28, 1999. The child was vomiting, had diarrhea, a headache, chills and fever. The child looked pale, ill, and mildly dehydrated. Dr. Steven Reichel ordered lab tests.
