Her instincts keep leading Alison McGhee back to the same place.

For her third novel, the prize-winning Minneapolis writer went straight to Sterns, the upstate New York hamlet that served as the backdrop to her first two: a reimagined version of her hometown, with a little grocery store, twin churches and plain-spoken people full of woe and compassion.

"It's the landscape of my heart," McGhee said, "and my writing is all about heart."
