Pfeffer was the son of wilhelm Wilhelm, an apothecary in Grebenstein, and Luise Theobald, whose family was associated with the clergy. His parents intended him to be the third successor to the apothecary shop founded by his great-grandfather; and even after several years of university study, Pfeffer still planned to enter the profession of pharmacy.
