DUTCH WAR (1672 1678). The treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (May 1668) ended the short Franco-Spanish war over territory in the Spanish Netherlands. Louis XIV (ruled 1643 1715) and his advisers had been concerned at the prospect of a coalition (the Triple Alliance) opposed to further French gains and had anticipated the enforcement of the secret partition treaty for the division of all the Spanish territories on the death of the young king, Charles II.
