ITALIAN LITERATURE AND LANGUAGE. Italian literature entered an active and important phase in the late fifteenth century that was stimulated by the revival of classical literature, a flourishing popular culture, and the growth of courts. Among the genres developed were the comic epic, lyric poetry, the pastoral, and comic theater.
