MELANCHTHON, PHILIPP
(Philipp Schwarzerdt; 1497

1560), Lutheran reformer. Raised in Palatinate court circles, the son of an accomplished armorer, Melanchthon was later mentored by a distant relative, the humanist Johannes Reuchlin. He absorbed elements of the rival medieval philosophical approaches called the
via antiqua
and the
via moderna
during studies at Heidelberg and T
