State regulators Wednesday found enough mercury in the air to create possible workplace hazards at a Joliet scrapyard and a Nicor Gas service center in Shorewood.
At both spots, the EPA found mercury levels about 30 times higher than the federal standard for safe exposure to the chemical during the course of an eight-hour work day for five days a week.
The air tests at the Berlinsky Scrap Corp., 212 Page Ave., and the Nicor facility at 1111 Cottage St. were part of a continued investigation into Nicor's handling of mercury regulators used to operate older gas meters.
