Forty years ago Caton Farm was a gravel road that extended out into the middle of nowhere. People were critical of county officials when they went ahead and paved it a few years later, said Sheldon Latz, who started working for the county's highway department in 1960.

"They said, `Why are you wasting money putting blacktop on them,'" he recalled.

For years, the two-lane blacktopped road was more than adequate to handle the mostly rural traffic for many years.

Then, in the 1990s, the city of Joliet started moving west down Caton Farm all the way into Kendall County. Suddenly, nowhere was somewhere.
