ELWOOD -- James A. Tyler was president of the family grain company in Elwood, a banker, and a Purple Heart veteran from World War II. But friends and family said Tyler said he'll probably be remembered more for his personal way of doing business with local farmers.

Tyler, 79, died Sunday after a bout with cancer.

Farmers didn't just come to James Tyler & Sons to sell grain or buy fertilizer.

"He had a following," said Bill Norton, a Grundy County banker who was joined by Tyler when he started the Exchange Bank of Gardner.

"I used to kid him that it (the Tyler grain company) was the Bank of Elwood.

They used to finance a lot of farmers."
