Joliet -- Joliet Area Community Hospice hopes to raise $3 million and build a facility where caregivers can tend to terminally ill patients.
The city of Joliet has pledged $250,000 in riverboat gaming revenue, or $50,000 a year for five years, toward the project.
The agency plans to seek donations to raise the rest of the funds.
Most of the hospice's clients receive care in their own homes, said Duane Krieger, executive director.
But the agency would like to build a 12-bed residence to meet growing demand for care.
"We'd like it to be as homelike as possible -- no institutional feel," Krieger said.
The hospice's mission is to enable people to die with dignity.
