NEW LENOX -- Ken Oldendorf was a tough-minded police officer who once faced down and disarmed an angry man with a loaded shotgun in a domestic dispute. But most of the citizens in New Lenox knew Oldendorf best as a "good cop" who loves the community, worried about the safety of school children and wanted the police highly visible on the streets to deter crime.

Newly retired from the New Lenox Police Department, where he's been police chief since 1991, Oldendorf will be honored at a village-sponsored retirement roast at 7 p.m. Jan. 6 at the New Lenox VFW Post.
