LEMONT -- Although Sylvia Urban missed her pierogi roller, she still managed to be the big winner in the second annual Pierogi Cook-off at Lemont's Heritage Days Saturday.
A tearful Urban said her husband of many years, John, died two weeks ago and she almost didn't enter the contest.
But her children insisted she enter.
"My husband always rolled them for me," Urban said.
"Making pierogis has always been family tradition."
Urban learned the fine art of making the little dough pouches and filling them from her parents who came from Poland.
The first place entry brought Urban a check for $200, a $50 gift certificate from the Eagle's Nest Trading Company, sponsor of the contest, a large ...
