JOLIET -- About seven years ago, nearly 1,000 names appeared on a petition to the bishop to approve a Tridentine Mass in Joliet. Sunday, fewer than 40 people were in attendance at the traditional Mass said the first Sunday of the month at Holy Cross Church on Elizabeth Street.

Tridentine Mass, stemming from the city of Troy, is Mass the way it was said before Vatican II took effect nearly 30 years ago.

The Rev. Bill Slikas, pastor at Holy Cross, says he wonders if Bishop Joseph Imesch will decide to discontinue the one-a-month Mass because of poor attendance.

"The parishioners of Holy Cross don't like subsidizing this," he said.
