Article: AMERICAN TAXPAYERS WANT TAX CODE SIMPLIFIED NOW

The issue: The federal tax code is 5,000 pages long and confusing to most Americans. We say: There is growing bipartisan support in Congress for simplifying the nation's tax code.

About 120 million Americans find the federal tax code so confusing that they spend $20 billion each year to have their taxes prepared for them.

In his recent State of the Union, President Clinton said nothing about simplifying the tax code -- 5,000 pages, 10,000 sections and counting.

Instead, the president promised "new tax cuts targeted to the needs of working families: for education, child care, and the environment." Let us reaffirm our support for lower taxes for all working Americans.
