The first tourists who came to the Wisconsin Dells didn't have as much fun as tourists today. They didn't have water slides, go-kart racing, mini-golf or amusement park rides.

But the Winnebago Indians, lumbermen, railroaders and early settlers did have the jagged rock cliffs, fern-covered canyons and deep forests.

The Dells, located 45 minutes north of Madison, Wis., has been attracting tourists for more than 160 years.

No wonder they're the state's top attraction.

The area has a split personality.

The Dells are spectacularly beautiful, with deep, cool canyons, sandstone bluffs sculpted into beautiful shapes by eons of flowing water, and a scenic river edged by evergreen forests.
