Say Will County's new rule deters their career advancement The Will County Merit Commission on Wednesday stuck with its decision to require associate's degrees of applicants for deputy sheriff positions.

The decision angers correctional officers at the county jail, who had asked that the educational requirement, which most do not satisfy, be waived.

"The general consensus is that the correctional officers are (angry)," said one officer, who did not want to be identified.

In July, the commission announced that, for the first time, applicants seeking Will County sheriff's deputy positions would need the degree. Before that, candidates needed only a high school diploma.
