Article: FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH MARKS 160 YEARS OF AREA SERVICE

LOCKPORT -- On Nov. 1, 1998, First United Methodist Church of Lockport celebrated 160 years of continuous service to the people of Lockport and surrounding communities. Also on Nov. 1, the church honored 18 people with 50 or more years of service.

The church began as a Circuit Rider ministry in the 1830s, an outgrowth of the work of John and Charles Wesley.

Charles was a poet and hymn writer and both had concerns for the poor.

The Methodist Church was known as the "working man's" church; today it is a church for everyone.
