Ice cream is one of summer's most satisfying treats, and it has a surprisingly long and rich history. The mystery of how the first bowl of frozen fare originated will most likely remain that.

According to www.sodafountain.com, ice cream most likely had its genesis from frozen fruit juices and wines.

It evolved into gradually into desserts made from frozen milk and cream.

Marco Polo has been credited for "discovering" ice cream, although what he brought back from the Far East was most likely sherbet -- ice cream with no cream, just milk.

It was said that in the 1600s, England's King Charles I paid a French chef dearly for "creme ice," and ordered him to keep his recipe a secret.
