Article: ST. MARK CHURCH CELEBRATING ITS 80TH ANNIVERSARY

JOLIET -- It was Oct. 22, 1919. Thirteen people met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Ingram to conduct a worship service. That worship service was the beginning of the church now called St. Mark Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

It was a fairly new denomination.

In 1870 in Jackson, Tenn., a group of people split from the United Methodist Church to form the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church.

By the 1950s the church, although still primarily attracting Afro-Americans, was found believers of other races joining the ranks.

This led to the changing of the denomination's name to the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
