If it moves and it's missing, the Tri-County Auto Theft Task Force is likely on the case. "In actuality, if it's got a motor and wheels, we know about it," said Lt. Larry Brouk, task force director.

A squad composed of 11 full-time officers, three assistant state's attorneys and two secretaries, the task force has cut auto thefts in the seven jurisdictions it serves by 34 percent since its inception on 1992.

Besides the work of the task force, which operates in Will, Kankakee and Grundy counties, Brouk credits technological advances in anti-theft devices, stepped-up training in local police departments and public awareness for the reduction in stolen vehicles.
