In the early 1900s, few Americans would have dreamed of hopping in a car and driving 30 miles to the next town, much less 3,000 miles across the country. That all changed, though, with the nation's first transcontinental highway in 1913.

Dubbed the Lincoln Highway, it stretched from Times Square in New York City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco.

The Lincoln Highway came through this area along Route 30 through Will and Kendall counties into Kane County and Aurora.

When it hit Route 31 in Aurora, it turned north and ran along today's Route 31, north to Route 38 in Geneva, where it turned west and ran through DeKalb County.
