The study and results Sleep apnea -- in which there are brief interruptions of breathing during sleep -- affects 9 percent of women and 24 percent of men in the United States. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin, wanting to know if there is any association between high blood pressure and sleep apnea, analyzed data from 1,189 middle-aged participants of the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study.

Then they invited some of the participants four and eight years later to participate in a follow-up study.

Other factors taken into consideration included body mass index, neck and waist circumference, age, sex and use of alcohol and cigarettes.
