Article: FARMERS MARKET OPENS FOR SEASON

AURORA -- The weekly farmers' market is a summertime staple for city dwellers anxious to pick up homegrown berries, juicy field-ripened tomatoes and glistening white onions. Since 1912, farmers from throughout Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin have traditionally been selling fresh fruits and vegetables to loyal customers at the city's open-air market.

"It's a way to get to the farm," said Madeline Liss of Aurora at the opening day of Aurora's Farmers Market over the weekend.

"It also offers a change in pace from a daily routine."

Time has changed the farmers market.

In 1921, gardeners still used horse-drawn wagons.

Housewives liked to buy chickens and ducks, and an occasional live goose.
