During his lifetime, Mark Twain's name and image were enlisted to sell cigars, writing paper and billiard tables -- fair enough, since Twain used all three regularly.
They were also used to advertise sewing machines.
In recent times, they have been used to promote everything from imported ale (his drink of choice was scotch) to a real estate office (Twain's family lost a fortune in real estate) and a pizza parlor (Twain never touched the stuff).
This week, that name, image and aura will be invoked by Al Gore and Joe Lieberman as they sell themselves to the American people by going down the Mississippi River to Twain's hometown of Hannibal, Mo., on the Mark Twain Riverboat.
