If it seemed like it took forever to get rid of your last sinus infection, it might not have been all in your head. More and more, patients and their doctors are finding that the bacterial bugs that can turn breathing into misery don't bite the dust, even when doused with antibiotics.

"They're harder to treat, that's true," says allergist Dr. Mark Shampain of the pesky infections that send Americans to their doctors 16 million times each year.

"It's a combination of things," he explains.

"There are more allergens and triggers in the environment.

And some of the antibiotics aren't as effective as they used to be."
