Her first day of practice as a college tennis player was an adventure in horror. Talk about culture shock.

Kristin Hejtmanek felt as though she'd entered an alien world as a freshman at Carthage College.

In some ways, she had.

When Carthage tennis coach Brady Lindsley outlined the players' training regimens, it was akin to a foreign-language class for Hejtmanek.

"One of the things he told was that I'd have to run at least a mile every day," said Hejtmanek, a 1997 graduate of Yorkville High School.

"My response was . . . `What!?'

"I had never run in my life.

So, when I started training, I would sprint, then walk, then sprint, then walk until I completed the mile.
