Ten years ago, the nationally distributed Audubon environmental magazine published an article that labeled golf courses "toxic waste dumps" and environmental disasters in terms of land use, water conservation and wildlife habitat.
Those trends are changing through Audubon International, a branch of the Audubon Society, which is dedicated to golf course resources and helping golf courses become environmentally friendly places.
Several Fox Valley area golf courses have taken advantage of the considerable resources and directives of Audubon International.
These courses have become "Audubon certified" by following a rigorous, though manageable, regimen of course management.
