Comedienne-actress Gilda Radner lost her battle with cancer in 1989. But the Second City alum's legacy of hope and laughter will live on here.
A Chicago branch of Gilda's Club opens Valentine's Day at 537 N. Wells St., 11 blocks south of Second City's flagship comedy club.
Gene Wilder, Radner's widower, and several friend launched the first free, community-minded club in 1995 to offer emotional and social support for cancer patients and their families.
There are now four Gilda's Clubs nationwide, and plans to open 15 more.
"Our philosophy is to help people learn to live well with cancer, no matter what the outcome.
