AURORA -- Historic First Baptist Church at Oak Avenue and Galena Boulevard has played host to strawberry socials, Thimble Bee meetings and Tom Thumb-style weddings featuring miniature brides and grooms.
Considered to be the oldest congregation on the West Side of Aurora, the church now hosts Suzuki violin lessons and a Hispanic congregation.
First Baptist was begun as an American Baptist Church in 1837 when 10 members of the Warrenville Baptist Church began meeting in a log schoolhouse about 2 1/2 miles east of Aurora.
They were called the Big Woods Baptist Church.
