Q: My friend told me that she got a very serious case of diarrhea from eating parsley.
Is there any truth to this?
A: Yes, there is.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a report that indicated fresh parsley as the source of acute diarrheal illness in both Canadian and United States citizens.
Because the bacteria were so unusual (shigella), authorities traced the contaminated parsley back to a farm in Mexico.
People in three states (Minnesota, California and Massachusetts) were affected.
All the victims had eaten in restaurants and had consumed chopped, uncooked, fresh parsley.
