Q: I suffer from explosive diarrhea if I consume milk or cream.
I don't have a problem if I steam the milk, and I have no symptoms from eating cheese, ice cream, yogurt, chocolate milk, Lactaid or buttermilk.
My doctor says this is due to lactose intolerance, but this doesn't seem plausible. Can you sort this out?
A: Lactose intolerance (diarrhea and bloating after eating products that contain the milk sugar lactose) is a common disorder, especially in seniors.
The problem stems from an inadequate supply of the enzyme (lactase) that digests milk.
