Q: My 11-year-old daughter insists on using hair spray. I'm not wild about the idea but cannot give her any factual reasons for my objection.

Nonetheless, I agree that the use of this product is inappropriate at her age; it is an example of what has been called the "hurried child syndrome," the tendency of some youngsters -- predominantly girls -- to rush through their childhoods by adopting adult trappings, such as hair spray and dyes, lipstick, mascara and other "grown-up" items.

Perhaps the best approach would be an honest one, in which you indicate that hair spray is not a necessary component of a healthy ...
