With nine days and counting, we visit two sides of the Christmas coin.
On one side we have the eruption of capitalist excess otherwise known as Bass Pro Shops, a spanking-new outdoor sports retail monstrosity that looks like a Door County lodge in the grip of a steroid rage.
On the other side is Waukegan's J.C. Penney, a product of the Spiro Agnew years that currently recalls the sight of King Kong following his fall to the sidewalk.
A Milton Friedman might say that one offers a glimpse of the future and the other of the past.
Whatever the case, these opposite forces somehow co-exist in our present -- at least until Dec. 28.
