Article: POLAR OPPOSITES IN CHRISTMAS PAST, PRESENT

With nine days and counting, we visit two sides of the Christmas coin. On one side we have the eruption of capitalist excess otherwise known as Bass Pro Shops, a spanking-new outdoor sports retail monstrosity that looks like a Door County lodge in the grip of a steroid rage.

On the other side is Waukegan's J.C. Penney, a product of the Spiro Agnew years that currently recalls the sight of King Kong following his fall to the sidewalk.

A Milton Friedman might say that one offers a glimpse of the future and the other of the past.

Whatever the case, these opposite forces somehow co-exist in our present -- at least until Dec. 28.
