Eleven worshipers were gathered for the first Roman Catholic communion service at 7:30 a.m. on a recent Sunday, all in blue uniforms and about 15 minute early. They were quiet and respectful of the surroundings as they sat near the altar, upon which there was a cross, hosts and two burning candles.

As soon as another four churchgoers trickled in, the group sang O Come, O Come Emmanuel to start the service.

But when the ceremony ended, these worshipers could not visit their favorite restaurant for a family breakfast or spend a lazy Sunday afternoon reading newspapers and watching football.

After all, there are only so many privileges granted to Lake County Jail inmates.
