ABBOTT LABS EARNINGS UP 10.2 PERCENT

Abbott Laboratories reported record sales of $3.045 billion for the first quarter of 1998, up 1.5 percent from the same period a year ago. Net earnings climbed 10.2 percent to $590 million, also a record.

Per-share earnings rose 11.8 percent to 76 cents.

The North Chicago-based pharmaceutical company noted that its sales were unfavorably impacted because of the stronger U.S. dollar.

Without that impact, sales would have increased by 5.1 percent.

Total U.S. sales went up 4.6 percent to $1.937 billion, while international sales -- including direct exports from the United States -- dipped 3.5 percent to $1.108 billion because of the exchange impact.
