It's common for businesses to belong to a chamber of commerce so that the group can make promotional efforts on behalf of the entire group. Many businesses advertise membership in such groups, as well as in the Better Business Bureau.

Consumers may not pay much attention to that membership until they have had a bad experience with a merchant or business and wish to report it.
