On a rainy morning last week, I enjoyed a cup of coffee with LeRoy "Boney" Bohnsack and his wife, Mary. They live on a pocket of unincorporated land on Ogden Avenue filled with woods, wildlife, a creek and gardens -- all too close to a car dealership.
LeRoy and his gardens were the subject of a Food Guide feature several years ago.
His first question when he called last week was to inquire if I had been out picking violets for violet jelly.
Not exactly, I told him. Picking violets is not a priority when grass is knee-high in my yard, and I can't find the lawn mower in a garage filled with construction debris.
LeRoy, of course, had already picked a quart of violets -- no stems, no leaves ...
